CHAPTER I. Down the Rabbit-Hole
Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, “and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice “without pictures or conversations?”
アリスはお姉様の側で大人しくしていることに飽き始めていました。それにやることもないですし。お姉様が読んでいる本を覗き込んだりもしてみましたが、その本には挿絵も台詞すらもないのです！！「こんな本、なんの役に立つというのかしら？」
to get tired of：～に飽きる、～が嫌になる
bank：丘などの斜面、土手
to peep into：～を覗き見する、～を盗み見する
use：（名）役に立つこと、使用すること
“and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice “without pictures or conversations?”
「そんな本になんの意味がある（役に立つことがある）のかしら？」とアリスは思いました。「だって挿絵も台詞もないのよ？」
アリスの心の声は、"thought Alice"を省いて繋げた “What is the use of a book without pictures or conversations?” になるかんじですかね。
"and”には、なにもすることがないアリスに更に追加されたイラッ！とした感情を、”or”には姉は楽しめるのに自分は楽しめない本に対する劣等感？混じりの蔑み、ムカッ！を感じますが、ネイティブではないので気のせいかもしれません。
So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.
そこでアリスは眠くて、ぼーっとしているなりに考えてみました。ヒナギクを摘んで、お花の冠をつくるのは楽しいかしら？そんな時です。突然、ピンクの瞳を持つ白ウサギが彼女の側を走り抜けました。
